Kuwait: Emboldened opposition puts pressure on government

The early weeks of prime minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah’s tenure have been marked by tensions with the National Assembly (parliament), centred on the grilling of social affairs minister Dr Ghadeer Aseeri in January, which was soon followed by her resignation. Aseeri had come in for criticism for Twitter messages in 2011, which offered support to pro-democracy protesters in Bahrain; MPs such as Adel Al-Damkhi and Muhammad Al-Mutairi accused her of being a national embarrassment.
