King Salman: Merkel visit raises questions of gender

King Salman Bin Abdelaziz received German Chancellor Angela Merkel on 30 April; she also met Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef. In the run-up, German ambassador Dieter Haller told Asharq Al-Awsat her visit would bolster bilateral ties between two capitals who “play a major role in promoting security and stability in the region, and… are active members in the G20, which is currently presided by Germany”. As with other recent visits by senior female politicians western media reported widely on Merkel’s decision not to wear a veil.
