Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi made his first official visit to Saudi Arabia on 10 August, flying in to Jeddah, where he was received by foreign minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal, Deputy Crown Prince Miqrin Bin Abdelaziz and Mecca governor Prince Mishaal Bin Abdullah Bin Abdelaziz. Sisi had held brief talks with King Abdullah in Cairo in June, boarding the king’s plane as Abdullah flew home from Morocco; this time, he was received in grander style, at the king’s Jeddah palace. Gaza was high on the agenda, as was Egyptian/Saudi co-operation more widely, Saudi Arabia having emerged as one of the most important backers of post-Morsi Egypt.
