Kenya delays 5GW target amid demand, revenue uncertainties
Kenya Power has released a five-year Corporate Strategic Plan for 2016/17 to 2020/21 which outlines KSh219bn ($2.1bn) of investments while pushing back the target of adding 5GW of generation to 2021. In September 2013, the government announced ambitious plans to add more than 5GW to Kenya’s generation capacity over 40 months, boosting output from 1,644MW to 6.7GW by end-2016 to back an extensive programme of industrialisation. In the government-formulated generation expansion plan, a total of 5,098MW of new generation capacity was planned to be built in the period July 2013 to December 2016.
