Kenya: No new wind or solar licences until 2017

Issue 267 - 06 Dec 2013 | 2 minute read

The government has announced that no new licences for wind or solar power plants will be issued until 2017. The country plans to add more than 5,000MW of new capacity over the 40 months from September 2013, of which a maximum of 15% will be sourced from wind and solar, and this allocation will be met by projects which are already underway (AE 262/1). Kenya has been struggling to stem the increasing price of electricity, which averaged nearly 21c/kWh in October and peaked at around 26c/kWh in November 2011, and according to cabinet secretary for energy and petroleum Davis Chirchir this is part of the motivation for the suspension.
