The Qatar crisis has seen the peninsula seeking friends where it can, including Iran, which has been sending food and criticising the Saudi-led campaign. Many analysts see opportunities for the Islamic Republic to increase its regional footprint. The crisis “has certainly intensified relations between Qatar and Iran in a way I don’t think Saudi Arabia would want”, UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson said on 6 July. However, the realities of Gulf politics suggest the impacts of this rapprochement could be over-stated.
