Iraqi Kurdistan embarked on an open-ended and rancorous constitutional crisis on 19 August, when regional president Masoud Barzani’s extended second term of office came to an end. While he remains in post, supported by the political and social clout of his Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and a questionable judicial ruling, he now personifies the geographic and political faultline that divides the region and which has historically been the cause of debilitating internal conflicts.
