Iraq: Sunni protesters hit wall despite intense mobilisation

Iraq’s Sunni protest movement continues defiantly, with slogans from recent Friday protests including “Either Maliki or Iraq”, “Iraq is our choice” and “Last chance Friday”. Sunni leaders have continued to advocate non-violence, but show little sign of honing their message. Their formal demands – which include a repeal of de-Baathification and the counterterrorism law’s death penalty provision, and a mass amnesty – remain too broad to ever be accepted by the Shia majority.
