Iraq: Gas flaring going out of fashion

Oil minister Thamer Ghadhban has put a 2022 deadline on ending the expensive and environmentally-degrading practice of flaring natural gas. Iraq burns about 16 bcm/d of associated gas, according to the World Bank’s most recent estimate, giving it the unwanted mantle of the world’s second-highest transgressor. Six years ago, the Basra Gas Company (BGC) joint venture with Shell, Mitsubishi and the local South Gas Company was set up to capture gas produced as a by-product of rising oil production, but progress has been slow.
