Iraq: Barzani sees off Gorran, crisis deepens

Masoud Barzani’s mandate expired in late August, but the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) president has prevailed in his determination to hold onto power, although the political cost is severe. In early October, Barzani dismissed parliamentary speaker Youssef Mohamed and the ministers of finance, Peshmerga forces, religious affairs and trade – all members of the Gorran party in the uneasy KRG coalition. Gorran has led the resistance to the unconditional extension of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader’s rule.
