Iraq/Saudi Arabia: Riyadh casts a wary eye towards post-election Baghdad

The evident failure of Iranian-backed factions to attain the anticipated electoral success in Iraq’s 12 May election will be met with some schadenfreude in Gulf capitals. The victorious Sairoon (On the Move) coalition remains something of an unknown quantity – even if its leader, Shia cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr, and his family have long been important players in Iraqi politics – its support base among poor Iraqi Shiites making it an uncomfortable fit for Saudi Arabia and its regional allies.
