Iran chalked up a victory over the United States at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands on 3 October, when the court ordered Washington to remove some sanctions on the Islamic Republic. However, any sense of achievement in Tehran was soon undermined by the US decision to pull out of the 63-year-old treaty which was the basis for the case.Tehran began its case on 16 July, arguing that the sanctions announced by the US in May were in breach of the 1955 Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations and Consular Rights between the two countries – signed at a time of considerably warmer relations.
