The scale of the challenge facing President Hassan Rouhani’s government is steadily rising, as highlighted by a string of public protests which the authorities are struggling to tackle and growing dissatisfaction about the economic situation. As well as the widespread economic protests across the Islamic Republic in December and January, there has been a wave of demonstrations by women protesting against being forced to wear the hijab and a raft of smaller incidents such as a strike by workers at the Hepco industrial complex in Arak this month.
