Iran: Moussavi promoted to army chief in reshuffle

Rahbar (Supreme Leader) Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has reshuffled some of the regime’s most senior military figures. The most significant move was the appointment of Abdolrahim Moussavi as commander of the Artesh (regular armed forces) on 21 August. Moussavi, who has been Artesh deputy commander in the past, was also upgraded from Brigadier General to Major General as part of the latest promotion. Moussavi takes over at the top of the Artesh from Major General Ataollah Salehi, who had been in the role since 2005.
