There was widespread outrage at Iran’s execution of Reyhaneh Jabbari, a 26-year-old woman accused of killing a man she said had tried to sexually abuse her. Jabbari was executed at Evin prison on 25 October. The United States and European Union condemned her killing, noting serious concerns about the fairness of her trial, including reports of confessions made under duress. United Nations human rights investigator Ahmed Shaheed told reporters he was shocked by her death, and noted a surge in executions in Iran over the past 12-15 months.
