Tehran is set to make further attempts to launch satellites into space in the near future, following the failure of a launch on 15 January. Communications and information minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said the launch from the Imam Khomeini Spaceport failed because the Simorgh rocket carrying the Payam-e Amirkabir satellite did not reach a high-enough speed in the third stage. The satellite, developed by Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran, was due to be placed in a low-earth orbit, where it would be used for imagery and communications.
