Iran, Russia revel in EU’s discomfort

The UK’s Brexit vote was welcomed in Tehran and Moscow. The initial result was welcomed by Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which said: “As a democratic establishment, the Islamic Republic of Iran respects the British people’s vote on leaving the European Union, and considers that as being in line with the will of majority of that country’s people to adopt their own foreign policy”. Comment from Iran then became more colourful, with the Islamic Republic Guards Corps looking forward to the break-up of Britain, with Scotland and Ireland soon to be free of “the tyrannical rule of the monarchy, the so-called Great Britain”.
