British newspaper The Telegraph on 19 October revived rumours that Qatar’s former prime minister Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al-Thani (HBJ) was eyeing the top job at the United Nations, quoting unspecified “reports from the Gulf” as saying Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad was “looking into politicly compensating [the] former prime minister” by pushing him forward to replace Ban Ki-moon as secretary-general in 2016. The rumours surface from time to time; Al-Arab newspaper reported the same in September 2013, but analysts have generally been very sceptical HBJ would have much of a chance.
