Recent developments in Iraq and the Gulf region have provided grounds for both optimism and pessimism from President Saddam Hussein's point of view. The renewal of UN sanctions and Saddam's subsequent assumption of the Prime Ministership demonstrate the strain under which his regime is operating. Factional fighting in the Kurdish north however gives the regime grounds for hoping that its opponents can be relied on to undermine their own cause.
