Germany approves arms exports

Germany’s national security council has approved the export of arms to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and other countries in the region, according to press reports – something of a turnaround, after political resistance to weapons sales to countries seen as repressive. The security council – made up of Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the ministers of foreign affairs, defence and development – holds its meetings in secret, but earlier this year, German press reported it had blocked the sale of tanks to Saudi Arabia.
