The role of ‘soft power’ in defining Gulf monarchies’ international relations is underlined by the role of Prince Badr Bin Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Farhan Bin Saud, the Saudi businessman turned culture minister who is at a centre of major cultural initiatives promoted in the name of his old friend Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MBS). Badr Bin Abdullah has, for years, been aligned with the Al-Salman clan, which in 2015 supported his appointment as chairman of the Saudi Research and Marketing Group media conglomerate.
