The murder of Briton Mark de Salis and New Zealander Lynn Howie on a remote beach near the town of Sabratha, 70km west of Tripoli, has shaken the tight-knit international business community in the Libyan capital. While the tragic event is unlikely to make any company operating in Libya reconsider its position, it is nevertheless an indicator of a potentially worsening security environment, and will confirm the decision of other energy sector businesses to stay away. “Those that are here, are here; and those that won’t come, won’t come. We are a different breed,” commented one Tripoli-based British businessman.
