Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani met Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta on 3 February in Doha, the Italian premier having flown in the night before. Letta, who was on a Gulf tour aimed at drumming up investment, reportedly discussed the possibility of Qatar investing in Italy’s oil and gas multinational Eni SpA, as Italy tries to sell assets and cut its debt. Qatar’s minister of energy and industry Mohammed Al-Sada was quoted as saying a team from the Qatar Investment Authority would go to Italy to discuss investing in “various sectors”, noting that Qatar was open to tie-ups with energy and construction companies.
