Travelling directly from Muscat, Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Doha on 2 October ahead of talks with Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani and foreign minister Mohammad Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani the following day. He is the most senior Iranian official to visit Qatar since the start of the dispute between Doha and its erstwhile Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) allies. Sheikh Tamim was reported in the Iranian media as telling Zarif that Qatar welcomed Iran’s role in regional crises, saying “continued consultation with regional countries, including Iran, is an undeniable necessity.”
