DRC power update: Inga III moves slowly, Katanga’s miners try to close supply gap
The South African cabinet on 21 August approved the Inga treaty signed by South Africa and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in October 2013. The treaty provides a framework for the two countries to develop the Grand Inga project. In a first phase, South Africa is expected to offtake 2,500MW from the 4,800MW Inga III development, then up to 30% of the electricity produced during subsequent phases up to an eventual Inga 8. The treaty will now be tabled in parliament for approval. The DRC Senate approved the treaty in June.
