Covid-19: another crisis for Iran

The political consequences from Covid-19 look most pressing in Iran, which has seen a rapid increase in the number of reported cases, far outstripping the situation anywhere else in the region. The first cases were reported in Qom on 19 February, but the authorities failed to place any restrictions on travel to or from the holy city. The number of cases has risen dramatically since then; several hundred new cases were being reported daily by early March.
