Court action looms for South Africa’s Eskom and REIPPs

Negotiations between government departments and Eskom this month will try to resolve an impasse in which the utility has refused to sign power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy independent power producers (IPPs) selected by the Department of Energy (DoE) since mid-2016. Speaking at Eskom’s quarterly briefing on 24 January, public enterprises minister Lynne Brown, whose department is responsible for the utility, said a meeting with herself, Eskom and the energy and finance ministers would take place in mid-February.
