Burundi: Power funding under threat

Issue 332 - 14 Oct 2016 | 3 minute read

The power sector has been hit by suspension of European funding amid a worsening political crisis, but China continues to play a role. On 26 August, energy and mines minister Côme Manirakiza announced the signing of an agreement with China on a construction schedule for a 17MW hydropower station on the Ruzibazi River. Works should begin in August 2017 and be completed in 2021. A prefeasibility study for the project was carried out by Fichtner in 1983, and the construction contract is expected to be awarded to China’s CGC Overseas Construction Group.
