| 2 minute read
Nabeel Rajab, arguably the most recognisable campaigner for human rights in Bahrain, was detained on 2 October for posting comments on Twitter deemed insulting to the interior ministry and the Bahrain defence forces, and has remained in custody pending a hearing scheduled for the Lower Criminal Court on 19 October. Rajab seems to have been charged with tort and libel against official institutions, after commenting online about members of Bahrain’s security forces joining Islamic State jihadists in Iraq. If found guilty, he could face another lengthy prison sentence.
