Bahrain: Overseas voting in local elections vetoed

Justice, Islamic affairs and endowments minister Sheikh Khalid Bin Ali Al-Khalifa has opposed a Legislation and Legal Opinion Commission June ruling to allow citizens living abroad to vote in elections to the three remaining municipal council, as requested by the Northern Municipal Council (NMC). Sheikh Khalid argues that while it is appropriate for those living abroad to vote in parliamentary elections – as they can do now if properly registered – “municipal councils have limited authority that does not exceed their governorates… In most countries municipal voting is limited to nationals inside the country and not abroad and that’s our approach here”.
