The government has scrapped a scheme designed to help more low-income citizens buy homes less than a month after launching it – seemingly due to the costs involved – and reverted to its previous programme. The Mazaya programme was launched by the Ministry of Housing in 2013, in an attempt to move people off the social housing waiting list and help them buy their own home. In the first five years, it helped some 2,600 Bahrainis buy a home – a small fraction of the tens of thousands thought to be on the waiting list.
