Bahrain/Kuwait: Grappling with labour reforms

Kuwaiti officials led by deputy foreign minister Khaled Al-Jarallah held talks with their Filipino counterparts on 9 May, as the countries inched towards a resolution of their dispute over the treatment of Filipino workers. An agreement on workers’ protection was due to be signed on 11 May, according to local press reports. Relations had soured after Manilla sent teams into Kuwait to rescue housemaids who had complained of abuse at the hands of their employers, leading to the Filipino ambassador being sent home.
