Allawi handed the reins of Iraqi government as protests continue
The chances of political stability returning to Iraq hang in the balance, as Prime Minister-designate Mohammed Tawfiq Allawi tries to build a viable coalition of supporters within parliament and on the rebellious streets of Baghdad and other major cities. President Barham Saleh on 29 January warned parliament it had to make a proposal within days or he would unilaterally name a new premier to succeed Adel Abdel-Mahdi, who resigned in late November.
