Algeria: Power expansion continues with Siemens turbine contract

A contract award to Germany’s Siemens Energy for the supply of turbines and generators to the Oumache power plant in Biskra province shows just how determined the Algerian authorities are to follow through on plans to bring extra electric power to the restless provinces. Over the past several summers the north-eastern oasis towns of Biskra, El Oued and Ouargla have suffered severe outages due to the increased use of air conditioners. Power cuts have historically had a knock-on effect on the water supply and these problems have combined to create regular social unrest.
