Algeria: French bidders absent from petrochemical tenders

For the first time since Algeria won its independence in 1962, there was not a single French bidder for a major energy sector tender issued by Sonatrach in January. Out of the 53 companies that submitted offers for $8bn worth of projects including contracts for the Skikda refinery upgrade, Algiers refinery refurbishment and the construction of a methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) plant at Arzew, 17 were from China, six from South Korea and five from Turkey.
