Ahvaz attack and its aftermath allows Iran and rivals to ratchet up bellicose rhetoric

The volley of six ballistic missiles sent into eastern Syria in the early hours of 1 October encapsulates many of the issues in the stand-off between Iran and its regional rivals and their most important ally, the United States. For Tehran it was a justifiable demonstration of its ability to go after those intent on doing it harm, in this case Islamic State (IS or Daesh), which Iran deems at least partly responsible for the attack on the military parade in the city of Ahvaz on 22 September.
