Abu Dhabi: National Cuts Foreign Staff

Sources at The National, Abu Dhabi’s troubled English language newspaper, have told GSN the paper’s foreign budget has been slashed. Launched by the Abu Dhabi Media Company in 2008, the paper has never acquired the international readership it hoped for, in part because of restrictions on press freedom. From January, it will have only four foreign correspondents: in the United States, Delhi, Beirut and the Gulf, having axed posts in Cairo, London, Nicosia and a second post in Beirut. Meanwhile, Britain’s Financial Times’ Gulf staff has also been depleted. Michael Peel and Camilla Hall have moved on, to Bangkok and the US respectively, leaving Simeon Kerr and Abeer Allam to cover the region.
