Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, was in Jeddah on 26 August for a meeting with Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal – a significant step in developing the relationship between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which has been more reluctant than the other Gulf Arab states to engage with Tehran under President Hassan Rouhani. Abdollahian had previously met Saudi Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdelaziz briefly on the sidelines of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s 8 June inauguration in Cairo, but a more formal bilateral meeting had been on the cards for some time.
