South Africa: Gauteng considers 300MW solar PV project

Issue 262 - 02 Oct 2013 | 1 minute read

Gauteng provincial government is considering utilising the 8m square metres of rooftop space available on its buildings to generate up to 300MW of electricity. The project would see solar photovoltaic (PV) facilities installed at an estimated cost of R11.2bn ($1.2bn), “based on Eskom cost estimates for solar PV plants”, a spokeswoman told African Energy. If built to their full complement, the rooftop systems could produce almost half as much power as all of the utility-scale solar PV power plants being built in the first round of South Africa’s renewable energy independent power producers procurement programme.
