Qatar plans to remain centre stage

Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani used his first major international address as emir to call for reform of the United Nations Security Council, and to make clear Qatar planned to remain active in international diplomacy. Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York on 24 September, Sheikh Tamim said the UN system hindered conflict resolution. “We all know that the responsibility for the failure to impose the political solution we all prefer for Syria is basically due to the inability of the Security Council to take the required decision and stop the bloodshed, and to the continued intransigence of the Syrian regime,” he said.
