KDP wins Kurdish election, Gorran pushes PUK into third

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), led by Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) President Massoud Barzani, confirmed its dominance of Iraqi Kurdish politics in the 21 September parliamentary election, winning around 38% of the vote. At a news conference in Baghdad on 2 October carried by local news wires, Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission said the opposition Gorran (Change) movement had come second, with around 24% of the vote, pushing Iraqi President Jalal Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) into third, with around 18%.
