The Federal Court in Ottawa (Canada’s national trial court) has dismissed a bid to halt the export of light armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia (GSN 1,029/5). Law professor and Quebec politician Daniel Turp had brought a case seeking to halt a C$14.8bn ($11.2bn) export order for the machinery due to human rights concerns. The court ruled on 24 January that the Canadian government had followed the necessary procedures to approve the deal. It added “The role of the court is not to pass moral judgement on the minister’s decision to issue the export permits but only to make sure of the legality of such a decision.”
