Iraq: UN recognises improvement in relations with Kuwait
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously agreed that Iraq’s obligations to return Kuwaiti people and property seized during the 1990 invasion should now be dealt with under Chapter VI of the UN Charter, which urges countries to peacefully resolve conflicts, rather than Chapter VII. Chapter VII gives the council the right to step in – by authorising actions such as sanctions or military intervention – if states do not follow council directives.
