Yemen: Tensions between MPs and cabinet

Issue 971 - 07 Jun 2014 | 1 minute read

President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi is facing further political challenges as parliament and the cabinet, led by Prime Minister Mohammed Basindwa, exchange accusations of corruption. A number of MPs, including parliamentary leader Yahya Al-Rai of the General People’s Congress (GPC), submitted a letter to Hadi asking for Basindwa’s resignation, and on 2 June approved a motion calling for a vote of no confidence against the cabinet. Hadi’s government also faces increasing criticism over the looming reduction of fuel subsidies. Finance minister Sakher Al-Wajeeh has said subsidies will be cut as part of a deal Yemen hopes to agree with the International Monetary Fund for new loans worth more than $500m.
