Yemen, ‘the world’s most acute humanitarian crisis’

Issue 1016 - 03 Jun 2016 | 1 minute read

The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has described Yemen as the world’s most acute humanitarian crisis. Even so, the UN has reported a lack of support for its funding requests. Agencies say that only 16% of pledges have been delivered since their first appeal in 2011. OCHA and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) initially requested $750m from the Friends of Yemen group in 2011; that request has grown to $1.8bn, to aid an estimated 14.5m Yemenis in dire need of food aid.
