UAE: Pioneer artist Hassan Sharif dies

Hassan Sharif, a pioneer of conceptual art in the region, died on 18 September, aged 65. Barjeel Art Foundation founder Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi called Dubai-based Sharif “a giant in terms of art in the UAE”. Sharjah Art Foundation president and Sharjah Biennial head Sheikha Hoor Al-Qasimi called him “an icon and pioneer, a very daring artist who pushed boundaries and inspired many artists”. Sharif began in the late 1970s drawing satirical cartoons for Akhbar Dubai newspaper.
