To improve Kuwaiti sport’s tarnished image locally and internationally, the government organised a festive relaunch of Jaber Stadium – the “ghost stadium” built in 2009 but mired in a corruption scandal about its fitness to host events. The affair became politicised as the government’s opponents also used it as an example of the allegedly huge scale of merchant family corruption.
