South Africa: Head of regulator Nersa resigns

Issue 294 - 12 Feb 2015 | 2 minute read

With no sign of a let-up in South Africa’s power sector problems, the head of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), Phindile Baleni, has stepped down. Nersa confirmed on 4 February that Baleni had resigned “to pursue other interests”. She was nearly four years into the job, having been appointed in April 2011. She had previously served as chief executive of EDI Holdings, which was given the ultimately unsuccessful task of restructuring South Africa’s electricity distribution industry into six regional electricity distributors. She has already been appointed as director-general in the office of the Gauteng premier.
