The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has received an application from Eskom for an immediate 25.3% tariff increase for 2015-16. The application was submitted on 30 April following a consultation process involving Eskom, the South African Local Government Association and the National Treasury. Nersa has launched a fast-track public consultation and will announce a decision on 29 June. Eskom is looking to recover additional costs of R52.8bn ($4.4bn) over the remaining three years of the multi-year price determination (MYPD) covering 2013-18, including R32.9bn for running its open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) and R19.9bn for the short-term power purchase programme (STPPP) to procure 800MW generation capacity.
