South Africa: Cable manufacturer opens factory

CBI Electric African Cables has opened a R150m ($14m) manufacturing facility in Vereeniging, near Johannesburg. The project received support worth R45m ($4m) from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Manufacturing Competitiveness Enhancement Programme, according to trade and industry minister Rob Davies. The facility is the first in sub-Saharan Africa capable of manufacturing cables up to 275kV, with conductor sizes of up to 2,500mm2. CBI Electric African Cables managing director Alan Dickson said: “South Africa’s growing electricity demand as well as the high copper price necessitated an investment by the company.
